On December 24 I woke to see my big pregnant belly plastered (without permission) on The Freethinker website, the folks who claim to be the “voice of atheism since 1881.” The title read Catholic Church has the ‘right and authority to veto scientific conclusions’ that contradict its dogma written by the editor, Barry Duke. Something I’d written caused him to leave skid marks on a marble floor, especially since it wasn’t written by someone “really, really stoopid” but by someone with a Ph.D. in Chemistry who just completed a M.A. in Theology. There was also a picture of Fr. Stanley Jaki and mention of my book, Science Was Born of Christianity: The Teaching of Fr Stanley L Jaki.
I laughed, and then I winced.
Of all the pictures Barry could have lifted (there are thirteen on the About Me page), he chose the one of me standing in my kitchen, wearing an apron, and sporting an end-of-pregnancy belly with the caption “Stacy Trasancos, proudly Catholic, proudly pregnant.” While I am proud to be Catholic and proud to have been pregnant, I also know that Barry is not a fan of Catholicism, nor is he a fan of educated, happy, pregnant Catholic women.
